Canada to withdraw fighter jets from iraq and syria as the country’s parliament voted Tuesday to close the border to all goods and people.
The motion was agreed to by 10 MPs — one shy of the required two-thirds — after an open meeting Monday night in the House of Commons.
“We will not be able to sell our goods to each other, nor will we be able to ship our people into the country from the southern part of the country,” NDP MPs Chris Charlton and Marlene Hall said. “This is not a solution, this is a recipe for disaster.”
Conservative MP Rick Peterson, a former Harper chief of staff, took the unusual step of addressing the House in honour of former prime minister Stephen Harper.
“We are here today as Canadian citizens. We have a duty to ensure our citizens’ human rights, their freedoms, their safety and the freedom to exercise our democracy and free press,” he said.
“A safe Canada belongs to all of us. I ask that Canada recognize that this is a tragic reality — and that all Canadians care that we live in a democratic, free and prosperous country.”
The new government will begin work in October on withdrawing Canadian troops from Afghanistan, to begin with the mission by the end of 2014, according to an Ottawa government statement late Monday. That announcement is due this week.
On Wednesday, a group of 20 academics called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to issue an executive order to instruct Canadian diplomats to “immediately stop all trade” between Canada and Iran, a close ally of Iraq, as well as Syria, for the first 12 months of his mandate in office.
The group, along with the 안마Canadian Civil Liberties Association, warned Canada has a duty to enforce the law.
“The Iranian regime’s relentless violation of human rights and the continued, unapologetic threats made by their government are directly connected to the ongoing war in Iraq. It is time Canada ended its trade with Iran, and imposed full legal consequences upon all companies doing business in Iran.”
