The motion was agreed to by 10 MPs — one shy of the required two-thirds — after an open meeting Monday night in the House of Commons.

The new government will begin work in October on withdrawing Canadian troops from Afghanistan, to begin with the mission by the end of 2014, according to an Ottawa government statement late Monday. That announcement is due this week.

On Wednesday, a group of 20 academics called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to issue an executive order to instruct Canadian diplomats to “immediately stop all trade” between Canada and Iran, a close ally of Iraq, as well as Syria, for the first 12 months of his mandate in office.

“The Iranian regime’s relentless violation of human rights and the continued, unapologetic threats made by their government are directly connected to the ongoing war in Iraq.
