The Vatican has discovered tens of millions of euros in a number of tax havens, including two overseas islands, documents have revealed.
The discovery of large quantities of money being stashed in offshore accounts was made in tax authorities’ initial response to inquiries by the European Parliament’s vice president, Martin Schulz, who asked the Vatican to provide information about the accounts.
He is now demanding information about these offshore accounts from the church and will write to both bishops.
Schulz has written to the bishops about the possibility of a cover-up on a “massive scale”.
The Holy See has not confirmed if there are tax havens at their disposal, but officials in the Holy See have said that a large number of countries have accounts there which need to be disclosed.
The pope and bishops are due to meet on 16 December in Rome to discuss the issue.
The Catholic hierarchy has previously raised concerns about the secrecy of the bank accounts where much of the wealth held is held. The Holy See says that the records are to be made public when the accounts become fully public.
The Vatican bank and the Vatican city state have previously insisted that their secrecy will be fully respected.
A new confidential report on the activities of the bank, published on Monday, showed the Vatican had discovered a number of large amounts of undeclared capital held in offshore accounts.
