AUSTRALIA will soon begin constructing its new Australian-built submarine fleet, in response to fears that Russia is building up its own submarine fleet.
The project will deliver to Adelaide the latest of Australian subs in operation in international waters and help increase Australia’s deterrent against Russian aggression against Nato members and allied interests, which Moscow has said it is prepared to pursue as well.
US defence secretary Ash Carter told journalists on Friday his country was “deeply concerned” about Russian submarine operations but said the US was working closely with its counterparts, including Japan and Germany.
“We’re going to work together very closely to try and build confidence and trust,” Carter said.
He said the US navy hoped to have a new submarine fleet in Australia by 2017. “That, I think, is going to be the case in terms of what the submarine fleet might look like,” he said. “That is still to be determined … it’s a very long time from now. It is certainly up in the air.”
A key goal of the Australian submarine fleet was to increase the capability of its new ships, Carter said, and the new submarines will be based in Adelaide. The Australian navy already has a submarine base at Kiel, which serves as a key command and control centre.
